Musicals had longer median runs than plays in every one of the 19 Broadway opening seasons from 2000–01 to 2018–19. Across 679 regular productions, the median was 188 performances for musicals and 81 for plays.
We joined IBDB’s season lists to individual production records, following each run beyond its opening season. The comparison includes 269 musicals and 410 plays.

The difference extends beyond a few long-running hits. Musicals exceeded plays at the median in every season, and a larger share reached both 100 and 1,000 performances. The one play reaching 1,000 was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Five musicals and that play were still running when we collected the records. We treated their reported totals as unfinished runs when estimating medians. All six had already exceeded their groups’ medians; counting them as completed at the captured totals gives the same overall medians.
This measures run length, not profitability or artistic merit. Plays often open for limited engagements. We have not classified the original booking plans of all 679 productions, so the comparison cannot establish whether audiences prefer musicals or whether longer runs were commercially necessary.
Method. We retained original productions, revivals and return engagements; excluded 83 entries outside the play/musical categories and 18 benefits; and counted the three one-act entries in Relatively Speaking as one production. Previews are excluded from performance totals. Counts were captured on 16 September 2026; ongoing totals were current to 13 September. Medians use Kaplan–Meier estimates with performance count as the duration measure.
