Most commercial West End theatres belong to a small group of theatre businesses: ATG, Delfont Mackintosh, Nimax, LW Theatres and Nederlander. Published ownership descriptions connect at least 30 of the 38 venues in our sample to those groups. Their operating portfolios cover 33.

We reconciled theatre and company histories with SOLT’s main venue list, retaining commercial receiving theatres and counting the jointly owned Adelphi once.

Theatre counts and reported seating capacity across the five major operating portfolios and other operators. The joint Adelphi is counted separately.

Ownership is broader than freehold title. Delfont Mackintosh describes its eight theatres as owned through six freeholds and two long leases. Nimax distinguishes its six owned theatres from @sohoplace, which it operates. LW reports six theatres, including its share of the Adelphi; industry reporting identifies ten owned and operated by ATG. Together those non-overlapping venue counts establish the 30-theatre lower bound.

Seats tell a different story from venue counts: LW’s five exclusive venues report more seats than Nimax’s seven. Across all 38 venues, reported capacity totals 42,277.

Those capacities need dates. The Shaftesbury reports 1,015 seats during its 2026–27 works, with 1,300 expected afterward. The Haymarket currently gives up to 860. Our table preserves temporary, technical and hire configurations instead of treating every number as permanent.

The ownership count uses published company descriptions and industry reporting, rather than a land-title audit. The sample excludes nine producing or subsidised institutions from SOLT’s 47-entry main list. Separate downloads record ownership evidence, operating membership, seating figures and exclusions.
